Oral Pathology

Our surgeons are qualified to diagnose and manage diseases of the oral tissue and bone. Oral pathology encompasses the teeth, gums, tongue, lining of the mouth and jawbones. You may detect a problem in any of these areas yourself or your dentist or physician may detect it through examination or x-ray.

The following may be signs of a pathological process:

  • Reddish or whitish patches in the mouth
  • A sore that fails to heal or bleeds easily
  • A lump or thickening on the skin lining the inside of the mouth
  • Difficulty in chewing or swallowing

Our surgeons will perform a complete examination. Initial treatment may include a biopsy of the area. This may be performed in the office using intravenous sedation or local anesthesia. In some instances, surgery may need to be performed in a hospital setting. After a specimen is obtained, it is forwarded to an outside laboratory facility for analysis. In approximately two weeks, our office will receive a report from the laboratory pathologist consisting of the findings and diagnosis. A follow-up visit will include discussion of your biopsy results and any further treatment recommendations.
